#GivingTuesday Alzheimer’s Association of Orange County!

Hi all, hope you had a great Thanksgiving!
If you follow me on other social media you’ll know that I’ve partnered with the Alzheimer’s Association of Orange County for a #GivingTuesday awareness campaign as part of my Thesis exit project. We are going to Barry’s Bootcamp at 4:15pm, TODAY, 11/27 to participate in one of their amazing classes. A healthy body = a healthy mind!

If you want to participate in the class it’s only $24 & the proceeds will go directly towards the Association. If you can’t make the class, donations are always welcome, even beyond today’s mission! Please share this opportunity amongst your friends & family – you never know who this could effect.

Alzheimer’s disease is the THIRD leading cause of death in California and 83% of caregivers are friends and family. 25% of those unpaid caregivers are from the “sandwich generation” – meaning, they not only care for an older person, but also have children under 18 to care for. This disease takes an emotional, physical, mental, and financial toll on all those it effects. We need to support the Alzheimer’s Association in their efforts to advance research, provide and enhance support for all affected, and promote brain health!

Happy December!

I can’t believe 2016 is almost over – thank goodness! It’s been a weird year for all of us it seems, so let’s hope 2017 brings some much needed positive change. Speaking of which…I posted about something on social media earlier – @MissAl_Leigh on Twitter & Instagram – that I also wanted to mention here.

I have been accepted to Cal State Fullerton’s Graduate School where I will earn my Master’s Degree in Communication Studies with an emphasis in Tourism & Entertainment!

I’m really nervous for this new adventure, but I’m excited to be going back to SoCal. While it seems like I would be even busier, I anticipate having MORE time to spend on the blog/vlog as I will only be in school two days a week with no job YET. I’m sure that will change as I find work & school picks up, but we’ll climb the hills & valleys together as always 🙂

Thank you for the continued support & stay tuned for upcoming vlogs like Food Friday & a Winter Haul! As always, please FOLLOW, COMMENT, SHARE, & LIKE!

Arizona Adventures!

Hey everyone!
Today’s post is at least 3 months overdue – sorry! I’ve been having some technical issues with iMovie that’s causing delays on my Vlogs so stay posted as there’s a lot to come!

This vlog is a little disjointed as you’re seeing what was meant to be part of an ongoing series about shenanigans to get into in Arizona because I was living there & attempting to get into shenanigans – followed immediately by footage of me moving back home.
If you’re confused about when I lived in Arizona, don’t worry – you’re not alone! I was going to film a big announcement & create several videos discussing the move, however, circumstances changed quickly & creating an ongoing series seemed pointless.
Long story short, I moved to Arizona in December 2015 for a new job in an attempt to expand my Resume, broaden my horizons by living in a new state, & live closer to several friends/family members, including my godchildren. Unfortunately, my grandma was diagnosed with cancer very shortly after that & I moved back to NorCal in July 2016 to help my family & spend time with her.

Please enjoy this small snippet of my time in Arizona featuring Danny from Savage Squad, click here to see their channel! Please FOLLOW MissAl-Leigh.com to stay updated with future shenanigans, SUBSCRIBE to the YouTube channel for more vlogs, SHARE, LIKE, & COMMMENT! Thank you 🙂

Sunday Book Club – Postponed!

Hi everyone!

Sorry for the late notice but this week’s SBC, “Turn Of Mind” by Alice LaPlante, will be postponed until next week! I’ve been on many adventures this weekend that you will see recapped soon & unfortunately don’t have time to put the post up. Many apologies! Lo siento! I’m sorry!

#EventRecap – @Macys #ChandlerFashionSquare supports @GotYourSix & @TAPSorg

How would you like the opportunity to donate to some really amazing Military Charities AND get 25% off this weekend at Macy’s!? Interested? Keep reading…

Right now Macy’s is partnering with a Military Charity called “Got Your Six“. I have spoken about this group in a previous post, but briefly, GY6 is a group that works with Military Non Profits (like TAPS) & the Media/Entertainment Industry to work towards bridging the military-civilian divide & portraying our military in a more positive, realistic manner. Their partnership with Macy’s will 100% support TAPS & other military groups through a promotion going on this week! If you donate $3, Macy’s will give you a 25% discount pass to use this weekend, May 13th-15th! 3 days of discounts for only $3 plus the satisfaction of helping a worthy cause!

I was honored to be given the opportunity to go to my local Macy’s & speak on behalf of TAPS – Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors. Again, this is a group I have blogged about & volunteered with before, but I will give a brief explanation. TAPS was founded about 20 years ago by a woman named Bonnie Carroll after her husband, Brigadier General Tom Carroll, was tragically killed in an aviation accident along with 7 other soldiers. She has since received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her efforts with TAPS. What I love about TAPS is they provide support to anyone that knew the Military member that has passed away, no matter their connection with them or how they passed away. I appreciate that TAPS recognizes that grief hits all of us differently & it doesn’t matter how close you are to the person. Sometimes just knowing that someone you used to see on a daily basis is gone, can really shake you & you deserve to have your feelings heard & your heart healed. My “mission” at Macy’s was to connect with employees, tell them a bit about GY6, TAPS, & how I connected to the group. By giving them this information, we hoped that when the time came for them to encourage Guests to donate, they would remember me & my story, & know that people in their neighborhood care about this, so maybe their Guest does too.

Here’s a bit of my story, as I’m sure you can tell, this post is basically what I said at Macy’s.
I became involved with TAPS somewhat because of my romantic relationship with someone in the Military. Seeing his struggles with PTSD & re-integrating into civilian life made me want to become involved with an organization that could help him and those like him, so I started volunteering with the Wounded Warrior Project. I was more than willing to help him fight his demons, but the relationship eventually became dangerous. After our breakup I was filled with an intense rage & grief. It was like he had died, & in a way he has, because the man I loved is gone. The person that remains is a stranger filled with hate & disrespect. If you watched Vlog #2, just by chance, I discovered TAPS. It appealed to me because it was easy for me to identify with survivors not only because of this painful breakup, but because I have been through the grieving process with the loss of my dad when I was a child, & the more recent loss of both my grandparents on my mom’s side.
Volunteering with TAPS is extremely rewarding. After my Macy’s talk, a woman thanked me for being there & said, “People just don’t understand, especially people your age. My husband was in Vietnam & he still struggles with PTSD. At first you think it’s just part of their personality, just how they are…” & I said, “Then you realize, they’ve seen & done things that have made them this way.” “Yes”, she said, “You’re exactly right. I’m so sorry for everything you’ve been through, & I’m so sorry your ex, someone so young, will probably struggle the rest of his life.” My ex wouldn’t want her to feel sorry for him, but I think he’s missing the point. Someone out there, a complete stranger, wishes for him to have a full, beautiful life, void of hardships & ugliness. I wish the same thing for him & all of us, so it’s comforting to find similar values in people. In moments where I think darkness will win, I remember people like the woman I spoke to today, I will remember there are others like me that want to help. Not everyone lets the demons win. I want to be someone that lets light in, & volunteering with groups like the WWP, GY6, & TAPS, among others, allows me the chance to do just that.

I’m hoping this Event Recap will help spread the word of this wonderful opportunity. Even if you don’t/can’t donate, hopefully this information will encourage you become involved in these groups somehow, or any Volunteer work you find valuable!

Try This! Winter Haul

Hi everyone!

Today’s post is the start of another Series for MissAl-Leigh.com – Try This!
Try This! will be posted on Thursdays, as often as I can get them out.
TT will basically be Hauls with products I think are worth mentioning, first impressions of Samples, full product reviews, or even an exciting activity I think you should try.

This first video is a Winter Haul covering some products I’ve purchased or been gifted over the Winter season. This doesn’t cover everything as I cut out quite a few products in order to shorten the length. Let me know in the comments, how long do you prefer vlogs to be? Are you willing to watch a 10+ minute video, or is 10 minutes, or less all you have time for?

Please let me know your thoughts on the Try This! Series & this Haul especially. I thought of this like an overview of my “Winter Purchases”, so I wanted to wait until Winter was officially over, but would it have made more sense to do this video earlier? Please discuss in the comments below. I hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching, & please remember to SHARE, LIKE, COMMENT, & SUBSCRIBE!

Announcement! Miss Al-Leigh on YouTube!

Hello all! Happy 2016!

This may be redundant for those of you who are loyal Followers of this blog – but I just wanted to make everyone aware that I am also on YouTube! Click on the video in this post to be taken to my YouTube channel & hit the big red SUBSCRIBE button!
This announcement comes along with some changes for my blog & a plea for help.
Please keep reading to see what’s going on…

I really enjoy writing/Blogging, however, I consistently receive feedback that people don’t have the time &/or attention span to read my posts, so they don’t Follow at all. I have attempted to write shorter posts to appeal to more Readers, but I feel like I’m not able to say everything I want & can’t give the best information. I briefly considered shutting my blog down as I was…annoyed with this feedback. I have to be true to myself & the content I want to produce, yet at the same time, I have to appeal to Readers or there’s no point. Rather than give up, I have decided to attempt to adapt by utilizing other forms of Social Media & self promotion in an attempt to gain a larger fan base. A larger fan base means more Readers means more feedback, means I can produce more content.

What does this mean for you?
– You’re going to see a lot more of me. It may feel like Spam at first because I’m going to be pushing ALL my posts out on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat, etc. For example, previously I have not promoted my Book or Movie Reviews – that is going to change. Anything that gets put on this blog is going to be fully promoted on all available platforms. #SorryNotSorry
– I will be constantly asking you to please Subscribe/Follow/Share/Comment, etc. I used to avoid harping on that because I felt that it was somewhat obnoxious, but I really want to grow my Fan Base & it’s going to be impossible if y’all don’t get involved & help me create a community.
– I may make everything more personal. I have tried to keep this mostly business professional because I include my blog on my Resume. However, in an attempt to create more content & change things up, I may start including some “Free Writes/Free Thought” posts & videos where I take a quote or song lyrics & write about it, or sit down & talk about life. This will in no way become “adult” or “graphic” as that’s not my nature & I know my family reads/watches my material.

The bottom line: I’m not even asking you to READ/WATCH every single post/video. I understand not all topics will interest you, but any help you can provide in Following/Sharing, would mean so much to me! Thank you for all your support! I look forward to many new Followers, Subscribers, Comments, & Likes here, on my YouTube channel, & on my Social Media! Remember, all links to get in contact with me are listed in the Contact page at the top of the Blog. Please leave me a Comment if you have any thoughts, questions, or concerns about this new era of Miss Al-Leigh!

Personal Announcement! Short Hiatus

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to write a quick note & let you all know – this blog is not going dark! However, I have a LOT going on right now & will be taking a short hiatus from writing weekly posts. I feel badly about this, but I have a ton of video content to edit & not a lot of time available to work on it. So the good news is that I have a lot of content to produce, but the bad news is, I don’t have the ability to complete it in the once a week timeline you’re accustomed to seeing here.

I will do my best to get back on track ASAP, but I wanted to let you all know to please hang in there & give me a chance to figure some stuff out. I have a big announcement for you all, hopefully within the next week, so please stay tuned for that!

In the meantime, if you really miss me you can take a look at my Social Media or shoot me an email – all the information is listed in my Contact Page! Thanks – talk to y’all soon!
